Customized Server Applications For Onyx-RAD

The Server applications are the "behind-the-scenes" workhorses in the Onyx-RAD PACS solution. There are numerous components to Server, allowing for customization to each institution's specific environment. By combining the Server modules as appropriate, it is possible to create a custom Onyx-RAD package for the institution's every need, including DICOM Acquire, TeleRAD (remote view station) setups, Long Term Archival, and Exam Transfers.

DICOM Gateway
This is the DICOM image entry point. Gateway implements the DICOM C-Store Service Class to store incoming exams from any DICOM-compliant modality into the centralized Onyx-RAD database.

Image Server
Heavy-duty application responsible for serving images to all connected Viewer workstations. Image Server retrieves images, notes, annotations, and other DICOM elements from the database; it also decompresses pixel data "on-the-fly."

DICOM / TeleRAD Router
This highly-configurable component is responsible for directing incoming exams to other destinations. Router makes it possible to "auto route" incoming data from modality (or other sites) via communication lines to any location in the world.

Queue Manager
The Queue Manager is responsible for transmitting manually "pushed" exams to distributed recipients using any configured means of communiation, such as phone line, network, satellite, and the Internet. Queue Manager enhances exam transmission with auto-resume capability and compression.

Compression Module
One of the most utilized tools in digital radiology, compression has become essential to preserving storage space in the PACS environment. The compression module in the Onyx-RAD package supports multiple algorithms, including JPEG Lossless, JPEG Lossy, and Wavelet Lossy. Lossy methods can be adjusted to ratio to provide the perfect balance between storage size and image quality.

Pull Server
For remote viewing stations with restrictive firewall or network conditions, Pull Server allows the user to remotely log in to the central database.

Space Management Server
Essential in single workstation installations and teleRAD configurations, this module manages storage space by removing older deleted exams.

Image Archive Server
Long Term / Near Line / Secondary Storage is controlled by the Archive Server, which interfaces with a mass storage device (e.g., a magneto-optical jukebox) to compress and store exams, thereby conserving space on the primary database server.

Listener
This module receives incoming "pushed" exam transfers (from Queue Manager) and imports the exam into the local database. Auto-resuming transfers are supported.

Onyx-RAD Server requirements

Onyx-RAD servers are "built to order," assembled and configured after a survey of each institution's specific needs. The modular nature of the software guarantees that the institution can purchase only the capabilities that are needed, without paying for unneeded functionality.

Viztek, Inc. recommends Compaq server hardware with RAID hard drive arrays for proven reliability and performance. Hardware configurations from other manufacturers are also available per request.

Connection to DICOM-compliant modalities and the Onyx-RAD viewing workstations requires a local area network (LAN), with 100 Mbps recommended speed. All machines on the network must have static IP addresses.

Communication with external sites (e.g., sending exams to mobile teleRAD workstations or external servers) requires a transmission medium such as Internet access (T1 or DSL recommended), or dialup modems (IDSN or 56k analog recommended).

Archive Server requires additional hardware for storage. Viztek, Inc. recommends a magnetooptical "jukebox" for this task, though tape drives are also often employed.

Allowing external access to your database is
possible via dial-up or with a Wide Area Network (WAN), and a firewall or VPN setup is recommended for security.

Certain configurations may require additional hardware components. All such items are available through Viztek, Inc., for a true "one stop shopping" solution.
